Cowhide leather and solid silver both reward a little attention. A few simple habits will keep your pieces looking their best for years.
Caring for your leather bag
- Store it well. Keep it in the dust bag, lightly filled with tissue paper to hold its shape. Store it upright, away from direct sunlight and heat.
- Keep it dry. If it gets wet, blot gently with a soft cloth and let it dry naturally. Never use a hairdryer or radiator.
- Wipe, don't scrub. Avoid contact with water, perfume, alcohol and greasy substances. Clean with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid household cleaners, alcohol and baby wipes.
- Condition occasionally. Once or twice a year, use a good-quality leather conditioner, testing it on a hidden spot first. Glazed finishes need only a gentle wipe.
- Avoid overloading. Heavy loads stretch handles and distort the shape.
- Protect it from friction. Keep it away from rough surfaces that can scratch, and from dark denim that can transfer dye, especially on light colours like Ivory and Mist.
- Mind the climate. Avoid direct sunlight, heat or humidity for long periods.
- Oil stains. Apply a neutral, colourless leather balm with a dry sponge or soft cloth, and wipe gently.
- Dirt in the grain. Use a very soft toothbrush and a touch of balm, cleaning in light circular motions.
A note on patina. Full-grain cowhide leather changes with use. Small marks, a deeper colour and a soft sheen are part of its character, not flaws.
Caring for your sterling silver
- Wear it often. Skin oils help silver stay bright.
- Put it on last. Apply perfume, lotion and hairspray first, then your jewellery.
- Take it off for water and exercise. Remove it before swimming, bathing, cleaning or working out.
- Store it airtight. Keep each piece in its pouch or a zip bag with an anti-tarnish strip.
- Polish gently. Use a soft silver polishing cloth. For heavier tarnish, use a silver polish suited to your piece and follow its instructions.
A note on tarnish. Tarnish is natural for real silver and a sign it's genuine. It wipes away easily.
